Cryptoparty at Konrad (Luxembourg) this Thursday

Having never been to one I am not sure exactly what it is and sadly I can’t go as I am out of the country. However, if you are interested in cryptography and digital privacy why not attend the party this week in Luxembourg. Some info from their email is below:

CryptoParty Lux 3, the third CryptoParty held in the Grand Duchy, will take place on Thursday, April 11th at 18:00 at Konrad Cafe, 7 Rue du Nord, Luxembourg.

“*CryptoParties* are a global movement in the interests of educating and
empowering people to protect their privacy in the digital domain.”

Oxygen – Play this week in Luxembourg

oxygen_500px

Decidedly non technical in it’s approach, the play takes a lively and witty look at the events leading up to that exciting moment when oxygen burst onto the European stage as a vitally important element in our understanding of the natural world around us. With the action shifting between the 18th century characters and a fictitious 2001 Nobel committee disputing who should be awarded the first “retro” Nobel Prize for Chemistry, it focuses on the role of competition and priority in scientific research and on the joy and drama of scientific discovery. Yet  Oxygen doesn’t revolve around test tubes : science is done by people and Oxygen is resolutely about people – their ambitions, desires, hopes, intrigues and shortcomings. But who really did discover oxygen? And what role did the women play?

We received a rather nice review for the play from The Chornicle.

Call for Talks: PI and More, Trier

For once Britain has successfully exported something to Germany, although I suspect that Raspberry PI sales not quite enough to make up for all the nice cars we buy from there….

The Raspberry Pi has drawn the attention of hobbyists around the world
and is poised to revolutionize computer science teaching in schools. In
Trier, Germany the €œPi And More event has been established to promote
the exchange of knowledge about small computer€. This €œRaspberry Jam€

Raspberry Pi, first programming steps, educational applications, or the
implementation of a media center with XBMC can be presented. Also
advanced topics such as assembly language programming or compiling
programs are welcome. Last but not least, we are interested in
presentations about your own projects and developments.

Contributions can be submitted until May 5, 2013 with a title and
abstract (about 160-200 words) via the form linked below. You will

The LiveCity Workshop on Smart and Pervasive Communications for Enhanced
Communities 2013 will be organized in Paris — France, 17 June 2013,
co-located with 4th International Conference on SmArt COmmunications in NEtwork
Technologies (SaCoNeT’2013).

SCOPE
———-
The LiveCity Workshop on Smart and Pervasive Communications for Enhanced
Communities will be held in conjunction with the 4th International Conference on
Smart Communications in Network Technologies (SaCoNeT 2013) in Paris, France,
June 17, 2013. The workshop is endorsed by the Technical Committee on SaCoNeT
2013 and by the ICT PSP LiveCity research project.

The LiveCity implements a range of pilots for city communities across the public
Internet by building a wireline and 4G wireless network of 5 cities, including a
right of way without interference from unwanted traffic. These communities could
range from emergency ambulances, hospitals, doctors, patients, museum curators,
city administrations and schools. The main goals and contributions include, but
are not limited to, authenticated and encrypted traffic, live and secure
interactive video-to-video, improvements for health services and city
administration, reduction of fuel costs and carbon footprint, enhanced education
techniques and augmented city experiences for tourists and cultural consumers.

Despite all the opportunities envisioned for future services and applications -
such as improved education, security, elderly support, among others – several
communication and technical challenges must still be addressed by researchers,
ensuring feasible and sustainable solutions with scalable and affordable options
to include, replace or improve existing services.

This workshop, sponsored by the Live City Project, will provide a forum in which
these issues and opportunities will be discussed amongst researchers, industry
stakeholders and the general community, leading to a better understanding of
current state-of-the-art research approaches and future challenges.

LiveCity Project Meeting and Update

Logo for LiveCity Porject

This week SnT at the University of Luxembourg will play host to the LiveCity project for one of our regular face-to-face meetings. LiveCity is a project which promises a guaranteed quality of service for interactive video services across Europe by essentially creating a virtual slice of the Internet over which these services run. Right now we have an infrastructure in place which has sort of created a new Internet inside the current Internet. In Luxembourg we will have our connection up and running soon and this will allow us to connect museums in Athens and Luxembourg  so that people can play games together and find out about each city and museum. Other example systems include those to support medical emergencies, schools and local government.

As we all know even the fastest home Internet connection often stutters to a halt when streaming media or when we are using tools such as Skype. LiveCity offers the potential for end-users and telecom providers to obtain stable and reliable connections therefore significantly improving the quality of service.

SnT will welcome partners from across Europe including representatives of large telecom providers, universities, hospitals, local government, schools and SMEs.

More information can be found on the LiveCity website.

Hack.lu Conference – October 2012

For those interested in a spot of computer hacking type stuff in Luxembourg, check out hack.lu

It could be classed as bit techy for me (being an HCI person) but for those with an interest in such topics ranging from IPv6 to hacking IOS devices it may be worth a visit. If the Haxogreen summer camp here is anything to go by then you’ll have some fun while also meeting some nice people. Although hopefully you will not encounter as much rain!

SnT and Glasgow Caledonian Organise EPT 2012

Researchers from the Interdiscicplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT) at the University of Luxembourg are co-organising a workshop on “Ethics, Privacy and Trust in Serious Gaming” at the International Conference on Entertainment Computing in Bremen at the end of September.  The workshop organising committee are:

Haxogreen Talk Slides

The slides from my Haxogreen talk are available from the download link below. Haxogreen is a bi-annual hacker camp held here in Luxembourg with at the time of writing is currently ongoing.

The presentation explored some key themes in mixed realities, from design through to specific projects in particular IPCity (that I worked on for a few years) but also more recent work within the I-GEAR and LiveCity projects. It closed by asking some questions about how augmented reality in the future. In particular identity, augmentation rights and privacy.

Haxogreen Presentation

Acknowledgements: Much of the content in the slides is drawn from work within the IPCity project, therefore my thanks go in particular to the team from Fraunhofer FIT but also the other project members.

Talk @ Haxogreen Summer Camp, Luxembourg

For those who are interested in looking more at the human side of mixed realities I will be giving a public talk at the Haxogreen Summer Camp here in Luxembourg. There are also many other interesting presentations some of which have already been announced and some which will be announced shortly.

Haxogreen is a hackers summer camp which takes place in Luxembourg from 26th-29th July, and is organised by syc2cat.

The early bird registration ends on 22nd June, registration is surprisingly cheap and for those staying overnight the website promises readily available toilets :)
